Westfield Leader: Mandelblatt Announces Run For Congress in 7th

WESTFIELD - Lisa Mandelblatt of Wesfield, a community actvist and public servant, has announced her campaign for Congress against incumbent Rep. Leonard Lance (R-7th). The next Congressional election is in 2018.

Ms. Mandelblatt is running because she is "appalled at the election of Donald Trump and the direction of our country" and vows to fight back.

"When I woke up after Election Day, I was stunned. I coudn't believe our country had elected this man who is an insult to women, hard-working immigrants, communites of color, our schools, and our environment," Ms. Mandelblatt said. "Then I started attending town halls and rallies and I knew I wasn't alone in my fustration and disgust, but our Congressman Leonard Lance has shown that he will be a rubber stamp for Donald Trump. Our country is in crisis and we need leaders who will stand up to the President and Republican leadership for the people they represent -- I know I can do that."

She said she made the decision to run after the Women's March in Washington in January.

"I think about the values I want to teach my kids -- equality and fairness, treating others with respect, and giving everyone an opportunity to succeed. When I saw hundreds of thousands of people show up to speak up for those same values, I knew I had to run," she said.

As a long-time resident of the 7th District, Ms. Mandelblatt turned her focus to her community after a legal career. She helped attract businesses as a member of the Downtown Westfield Corporation, the mananging entity of Westfield Special Improvement District, and she helped Temple Emanu-El's pre-school program as the chairwoman of the early education committee.

When her children were school age she was co-president of the Washington Elementrary School PTO and for the past eight years she has worked across the school distrct as a subsitute teacher.

"I'm not a politican, but I am a lawyer, mom, community activist, and public servant. I've been on the reciving end of bad public policy, and like many Americans, I'm tired of Washington politicans who don't listen to the people they represent. Leonard Lance works for Donald Trump and Washington politics. I'll work for families like my own."

Ms. Mandelblatt has a bachelor's degreee from Cornell University and a law degree from Fordham University, and practiced ligitation law in New York and Massachusetts. Lisa and her husband, Gary, are the parents of two grown children.
