CD7 Candidate Lisa Mandelblatt: Fundraising Matters

Lisa Mandelblatt, a Democratic candidate for New Jersey's Seventh Congressional District, said the ability to raise money will play an important role in defeating Congressman Lance in the fall.

Mandelblatt is the leading fundraiser of the seven candidates vying for the Democratic nomination in CD7, according to reports made available Thursday by the Federal Election Commission. Mandelblatt has raised $659,023 so far and has $414,239 cash on hand at the end of the fourth quarter.

"While the ability to raise money is not everything, it's definitely a necessary part of being a candidate," Mandelblatt said. "The candidate Democrats select to run against Congressman Lance must have a proven track record of raising money. As a first time candidate, I have shown my ability and willingness to raise the money needed to defeat Congressman Lance."

Sharon Stockwell, a Westfield resident and member of the Union County Democratic Committee, said she will be encouraging other Democratic committee members to consider a candidate's fundraising ability.

"As a grassroots member of the party, I wish money wasn't important, but I am also a realist and I understand how important it's going to be to have a campaign war chest to flip the seat to a Democrat," Stockwell said. "I supported Lisa before I knew what a steadfast fundraiser she was. The fact that she leads the pack in fundraising only  reinforces my reasons for supporting her."

A lifelong resident of the district, Mandelblatt is a working mom and a community activist who plans to focus on creating good paying jobs, improving public schools, protecting women’s health care, and making sure everyone in New Jersey has a chance to get ahead.

Former Westfield Mayor Tom Jardim, who is also a member of the Union County Democratic Committee, said Mandelblatt is a tenacious fundraiser.

"As a former elected official, I know the difficulty of raising money, but I also know how important it is to a successful campaign," Jardim said. "Lisa has demonstrated that she has the chops to beat Congressman Lance."

Jardim added that he supports Mandelblatt because she is the right candidate for the times.

"In any other year, many of the others in the race would have been viable candidates, but this year is different," Jardim said. "Voters are not looking for Washington or Trenton experience, they want someone who comes from the grassroots of the district. Many of the newly energized voters are women and are looking to increase the number of women in Congress, which is long overdue. Lisa is the perfect candidate for this time in our history."
